Once again the weather was perfect, the snow conditions were suburb and the students fantastic.
The 2019 Heaton Ski Camp was a huge success with 25 students attending from both Year 7 and 8. We departed school at 7:30 on Thursday the 8th of August and arrived at Porters at 9 am. Day one consisted of some free skiing where students who were new to Porters had a chance to explore the mountain with friends and get the hang of riding the t-bars. Lunch was macaroni cheese with home baking – the 30 chunks of lollie cake disappeared so fast that the adults had no chance. At 12:30 there was race training. The students learnt how to set up a course, putting up the gates, then sessioned them with pointers from the knowledgeable ski school team. Everyone learnt lots but it was hard work.
The Lodge was great, with lots of healthy food provided and a warm environment. Then we had the evening entertainment – Mrs S made up games and a quiz where everyone won prizes.
It was great staying at the lodge because we were only a 10-minute drive to the lifts. The school van had to put on chains because we had had fresh snow overnight – perfect conditions for a day of freeriding and freeride lessons with the Porters ski school.
Just about everyone skied Big Mama and it was awesome. We got back to Christchurch on Friday evening very tired but very happy.
