Back to Back National Cricket Champions!

Our Heaton girl’s a class above the rest, making it four National titles in five years.

Our Heaton Girls’ First XI qualified again for the National Primary Shield tournament, seeing off skilled competitive cricketers in their lead up matches.

Heaton made a brilliant start to the tournament winning both games in Rounds 1 and 2 comfortably. Our second day’s games were to be the toughest with Weston, Viscount and Heaton sharing top of the table. After a rain delay Heaton won the toss and elected to bat. Opening batters made a quick fire 120/2. Weston went on to make a good start with the bat but with excellent fielding they were all out for 78/5 after 18 overs.

The final match of the day brought together the two top teams. Viscount a team of big hitters with superb skills in the field, looked very confident. Heaton batting first made 168. As our girls walked out to field they felt the nor’wester’s presence! Bowling conditions were not ideal. Viscount made an explosive start but smart field placements, dynamic fielding and tidy bowling shut down the runs. Viscount ending their innings forty runs short of the target.

The girls went into the final game against Raroa feeling confident knowing that anything other than a loss would mean we would be the champions. Winning the toss our opening batters Joey and Lucy made a great opening stand of 68. Joey was then joined by Georgia who both ended their innings not out, adding a 98 run partnership. Raroa looked energised but 166 runs were too hard to chase down, with Heaton winning by 66 runs.

CongratulatIons to our girls for their fantastic efforts throughout the season. A sincere thanks to coach Barry van Beurten for his time, energy and dedication, and our manager Mrs Wendy Edge for her ongoing commitment and fantastic support. Special mention should be made of Lucy, Georgia and Joey who were the top 5 batters, and to Georgia who was named tournament MVP.
