It was with a very heavy heart, that I sent you an email on Monday to tell you that our teacher and friend Craig Robinson passed away last Thursday. Craig began teaching at Heaton in 2014 as lead teacher for digital technologies and one of the senior management team. We quickly learned that he was a great fan of a good shiraz, coffee and blue cheese! He immediately took charge of being the basketball coordinator. Basketball was a particular passion of his and he was instrumental in gaining the funding and building the new basketball court which is a favourite play area of many of our students. Craig spent some years as a photographer and he brought these artistic skills and experience along with his strength in digital technologies to the Heaton team and community. We particularly remember his wonderful sense of humour, his ability to ask challenging questions without upsetting anyone, his loyalty and commitment to our team, his integrity and his warmth and kindness. Craig had a huge presence on our staff from the minute he started at our school. I remember saying to him what a vital role he had on our team as the most senior male staff member. This did not go down so well with him until I told him it was a huge compliment and that he was extremely highly regarded by the staff as someone they could all go to and know that they had his support and guidance. Previously Craig had been teaching for 20 years at Christchurch South Intermediate School as a teacher and senior manager. Craig reduced his teaching hours when he received his diagnosis in 2017 and finally finished mid 2018. He was determined to leave the school in the best possible position, which he did. Craig will never be forgotten by any of us and will always have a special place in our hearts. Our love goes to Mary, George, Peggy and Alfie as they continue their lives without his physical presence but with so many amazing memories to treasure and keep him close.
A celebration of Craig’s life will be held at 2.00 pm next Monday, 9 September at Westpark Chapel, 467 Wairakei Road. Our staff will be attending and the school will be closed from 12.30 pm. Our thanks for your support and understanding.
This week, many of you have enjoyed watching the School Production, Robin Hood and the Sherwood Hoodies. The standard of the whole show is extremely high and I have received so many wonderful comments from many of you. The cast and crew totalled 102 students and every staff member had some part to play in ensuring the success of the show, an amazing team effort. However, no show could be produced to this incredibly high standard without the drive, enthusiasm, talent and high expectations of the Director, Janiene Hill. Thank you so much to Janiene for all her extremely hard work over many months. Our students have had the privilege of an experience where they have learned so much and that they will never forget. What a gift!
