Learning Support


The Learning Support Team at Heaton Intermediate Normal School provides support for any student who needs programme adaption, a specialized programme, materials or other resources to facilitate learning to the best of their ability.

In order to best meet the needs of the learner, the Learning Support Team works in close correlation with the school teaching staff, parents/caregivers and whanau and, where appropriate, outside agencies.


Students requiring Learning Support are identified in a number of ways:

  • Information from the previous school
  • Entrance exercises
  • Parental communication and interviews
  • Beginning of the year testing
  • Teacher identification


A referral by a teacher is put through to the learning support team where further testing is implemented to identify the specific need(s) of the student.


A variety of programmes are offered by the learning support team in order to support a variety of specific needs.

  • Social interaction

  • High school transition
