Girls’ Cricket Nationals 2017

Heaton Girls’ Cricket team Back to Back to Back National Cricket Champions!

Our Heaton Girls’ First XI qualified again for the National Primary Shield tournament seeing off skilled competitive cricketers in their lead up matches.

Heaton made a brilliant start to the tournament winning both games in Rounds 1 and 2 comfortably. Our second day’s games were to be the toughest with Holy Cross School (Papatoetoe) and Heaton sharing the top of the table.

The final match of Round 4 brought together the two top teams. Holy Cross School a team of big hitters, dynamic bowlers with superb skills in the field, looked very confident. Heaton batting first, making 85/10 (17.2 ov). As our girls walked out to field they felt confident that they could defend 85 runs. Heaton made an explosive start with Estella taking a wicket with her first ball of the innings. Smart field placements, dynamic fielding and tidy bowling shut down the runs. Holy Cross School ending their innings twenty seven runs short of the target.

The girls went into the final game against Raroa Normal Intermediate feeling confident knowing that anything other than a loss would mean we would be the champions. Winning the toss, our opening batters Ash and Estella made a great start. After the loss of our first wicket, Estella made great partnerships with both Niamh and Lucy, and finished the innings with an impress 67 not out off 66 deliveries. Raroa looked energised, but 139 runs were too hard to chase down, with Heaton winning by 72 runs.

Congratulations to our girls for their fantastic efforts throughout the season. A sincere thanks to coach Barry van Beurten for his time, energy and dedication, throughout the year. Special mention should be made of Estella who was MVP, and to Niamh who was in the top 5 batters and bowlers, for the tournament.
